Our Work
At Drishti Eye Foundation, we are dedicated to eliminating preventable blindness and ensuring that every individual has access to affordable and high-quality eye care. Through a combination of strategic initiatives, impactful projects, and collaborative efforts, we address the challenges of eye health with compassion, innovation, and inclusivity.
"SHAPU AWARENESS PROGRAM"
Drishti is focused on raising awareness about SHAPU (Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis), a rare eye disease found exclusively in Nepal. First identified 50 years ago, the disease’s exact cause remains unknown, but it is transmitted by a moth vector during the post-monsoon season. SHAPU primarily affects children, and if not treated promptly, it leads to blindness within days. The disease outbreaks alternately occur every odd year, with the next expected in 2025.
To address this, Drishti Eye Foundation is partnering with the Ministry of Health, local authorities, and eye hospitals to educate community health workers (CHWs) and school teachers. So far, over 1,000 teachers and 850 CHWs have been trained. The foundation aims to expand its outreach to ensure early detection and treatment of SHAPU cases in the community.
Current and past projects
Vision Restoration Initiative
This project focuses on restoring sight through cataract surgeries and treatments for other reversible eye conditions.
- • Over 10,000 surgeries performed to date.
- • Partnerships with local hospitals to expand surgical capacity.
- • Post-surgery rehabilitation support for patients.
Comprehensive community outreach ensures that even the most remote populations receive proper medical attention and post-operative care.
Community Eye Health Camps
Empowering local health workers and teachers to identify and manage basic eye infections.
- • Screening and treatment of refractive errors, cataracts, and infections.
- • Referrals for complex cases requiring advanced care.
- • Free glasses distribution and on-site minor surgeries.
By training local health posts and community volunteers, we create a sustainable grassroots network capable of early identification, primary treatment, and rapid emergency referral for acute eye health issues within rural villages.
Children's Eye Health Program
Focused on ensuring that children have the vision they need to learn and thrive.
- • Regular screenings in schools and local communities.
- • Education for parents and teachers about early signs of eye problems.
- • Partnerships with educational institutions for long-term impact.
Early detection in children is critical for preventing lifelong visual impairments. Our school screening camps provide free eye check-ups, distribute prescription eyeglasses to students in need, and refer complex cases to specialized pediatric ophthalmology centers.
Sight for Seniors Initiative
Bringing advanced eye care directly to rural and underserved hilly regions of Nepal.
- • Regular screenings for glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.
- • Affordable surgeries and treatment plans for elderly patients.
- • Advocacy campaigns to encourage families to prioritize senior eye care.
The Sight for Seniors Initiative provides essential eye care to elderly people in rural and underserved communities across Nepal. Through mobile eye camps, regular screenings, medicines, consultations, and affordable treatment, we help seniors detect and manage eye conditions early while improving their vision, independence, and quality of life.
Disaster Response and Emergency Eye Care
Providing humanitarian support and prompt eye care services to communities affected by natural disasters.
- • Emergency eye care camps for disaster-affected populations.
- • Distribution of essential medical supplies and glasses.
- • Collaboration with disaster relief agencies and local partners.
Our Disaster Response and Emergency Eye Care initiative provides humanitarian support and essential eye care to communities affected by natural disasters. Following emergencies such as the 2023 Jajarkot earthquake, we support affected families with basic relief while working with local partners to deliver timely eye care, medical supplies, and vision services.
